Ladies had the following complaints about him: W - He simply loves to Wish and hope too much. That can get annoying. Believe me! E - He is way too Emotional for a guy – always happy or sad or regretful. Gosh! I - I particularly find him too Impersonal, like he isn’t referring to anyone in particular. They say he uses ‘It is’ too much. They frankly find it annoying! R - He always makes these Requests of people, expecting to throw his will on them – always wanting somebody else to do something. Well, you can’t make me! Plus he makes Recommendations for other people, like he’s the only one that is smart. D - He can be so Doubtful – always uncertain about something. Annoying much! O - He has this way of randomly shouting out Ojalá, which is another way of wishing. Why doesn’t he just say that? Dude’s got issues! Special Features: He always shows up, wearing a que between two subjects, and is known for drastically changing any verb that follow him. There have been reports of –ar verbs disguised, wearing endings belonging to -er or –ir verbs, and –er and –ir verbs, disguise themselves as –ar verbs. Some say some other verbs look altogther different. Capture him! Let’s see if we can identify the subjunctive culprit hiding among these sentences. Formation of the Present Subjunctive In order to form the Present subjunctive: Step 1: Got to the first person of the present tense of the verb (hablo; bebo; vivo) Step 2: Take off the ‘o’ (habl; beb; viv) Step 3: Now add the oppposite endings – meaning the –ar verbs will now get the endings (e; es; e; emos; en) and the –er and –ir verbs will get the endings (a; as; a; amos; an) hable, hables, hable, hablemos, hablen / beba, bebas, beba, bebamos, beban viva, vivas, viva, vivamos, vivan Some have irregular first persons. E to IE and O to UE stem changing -AR and -ER verbs All e-ie and o-ue stem-changing -AR and -ER verbs in the present indicative follow the same rules in the present subjunctive: all forms follow the stem change except for nosotros form - (This uses the infinitive stem).
All e-ie and o-ue stem-changing -IR verbs in the present indicative follow the same rules in the present subjunctive except the nosotros form where the e changes to i and the o changes to u.
All e-i stem-changing -IR verbs in the present indicative maintain the stem-change in all forms.
All verbs ending in -ger and -gir change the g to a j in all forms.
Please note that the Present Subjunctive has the same form as the Polite Command.
